Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is a specialized area of Physiotherapy that focuses on the muscles, tissues, and systems that support your bladder, bowel, and pelvic organs. These muscles play an important role in everyday functions like continence, core stability, and sexual health. Support in this area can make a meaningful difference in comfort, function, and overall well-being.

Pelvic health care is for everyone. People of all ages, genders, and activity levels can benefit from support in this area.

At Driftwood, we believe pelvic health is an essential part of overall well-being, and that everyone deserves access to care that is informed, supportive, and free of judgment.

Pelvic health physiotherapy can help with a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Urinary incontinence/leakage, urgency, or frequency

  • Bowel concerns such as constipation, urgency or incontinence

  • Pelvic organ prolapse or feelings of heaviness/pressure

  • Pelvic pain, including chronic pelvic pain, pain with intercourse or tampon use, bladder pain, endometriosis and vulvar pain

  • Pregnancy-related discomfort and preparation for labour & delivery

  • Postpartum recovery, including core and pelvic floor rehabilitation

  • Low back, hip, or core dysfunction related to the pelvic floor

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation (gynecological surgeries, prostate surgery, pelvic surgeries)

Pelvic floor dysfunction is not always about weakness. In many cases, the muscles may be overactive or tense, and strengthening alone may not be the answer. This is why a thorough, individualized assessment is so important. Your care will be tailored specifically to your body, your symptoms, and your goals.

What Pelvic Physiotherapy Looks Like at Driftwood

Care at Driftwood is centred around creating a space where patients feel comfortable, respected, and supported.

Pelvic health sessions are approached with a warm, open, and inclusive mindset, allowing space for questions and conversations around concerns that may feel personal or difficult to discuss. Time is taken to understand each person’s full story, not just their symptoms, in order to develop a plan that feels appropriate and aligned with their goals.

Treatment may include a combination of education, movement and exercise, breathing and coordination work, and hands-on techniques when appropriate. Pelvic health is always considered in the context of the whole body, including posture, core function, and daily habits.

Care is collaborative throughout the process, with patients actively involved in decision-making and the direction of their treatment.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Before your appointment, you’ll be asked to complete an intake form. This helps us better understand your history and concerns ahead of time so we can make the most of your session together.

During your visit, we will spend time discussing your symptoms, health history, and goals. A physical assessment may include looking at your posture, movement, breathing patterns, and core function.

An internal assessment (vaginal or rectal) may also be recommended, as it can provide valuable information about pelvic floor muscle function. However, this is always optional. We will talk you through everything beforehand, answer any questions you may have, and obtain your full consent. If you prefer not to proceed with an internal assessment, alternative options will always be offered.
